First Sunday of Lent
SERMON: The First Step
SCRIPTURE: Matthew 3:13-17
REPONSIVE READING PSALM 1
Leader: Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers,
Everyone: but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.
Leader: That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither-- whatever they do prospers.
Everyone: Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away.
Leader: Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
Everyone: For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Adapted from the United Church of Canada)
We are not alone, we live in God’s world. We believe in God who has created and is creating; who has come to us in Jesus, the Word made flesh, to reconcile and make new; who works in us and others by the Spirit. We trust in God. We are called to be the Church, to celebrate God’s presence; to live with respect in creation; to love and serve others; to seek justice and resist evil; to proclaim Jesus’ message of hope, inclusion, and grace. In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God.
THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in Heaven, Hallowed be Thy name
Thy Kingdom Come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen
ANTHEMS AND HYMNS
Anthem: Oh Noah--Sung by the Junior Choir
Offertory: Here I Am Lord--Sung by Janet Cristini and Louise Robie
